New to Mac. Can I play avis, mpgs, wmas, etc.?

I'm buying a MacBook Pro at Xmas. I want to play all my avi. mpg, wma, files on it. Can I do this WITHOUT buying Office for Mac? Or must I use Windows Media Player. Can OSX play these files? If so, what player does it use? If not, what player can I use?
