How can I fix my broken screen on my laptop?

I have a a gateway laptop. About 4 years ago, I mistakenly dropped my laptop. Unfortunately, I haven't had the money to replace it or get a tech to fix it. The problem is the laptop will come on, but the screen would stay completely black. I tried the contrast and brightness of the screen, didn't work. I tried the 30sec & 60sec turn off and taking out the battery trick, and nothing works. Is their any other way i can fix it myself? If not I have to spend money on an expensive tech.
